PLANTING ZONE INFORMATION
Using the Map below you may figure out your planting zone. I ship from the valley of California which is in Zone 9. The zone hardiness is generally printed on the labels on the plants you ordered. However these labels do not necessarily reflect the zones in which the plants can survive the winters. The labels will contain a slight description, which will also specify if the plant is an Annual or Perennial in the zones stated. (e.g.) If your label says Zones 8-10 and lists the plant as an Annual. This means the plant will thrive in the peak season in Zones 8-10, however it will die in the winter and will not return. Perennial means your plant is most likely going to come up again next year, like a Tulip or Daffodil, if it was planted within the mentioned planting zone.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Using the table above in reference to the labels on your plants, you may see where your plants are to be planted. Some plants, like Parrot Feather, Horsetail, Penny Worth, and Creeping Jenny, can survive in both Marginal & Bog conditions, experiment placing your plants with their foot at the water line first, if the "Crown" of the plant, the area where the plant just begins to give root, is above the water line this is called "Bog Planting"; If the crown is to be placed below water level this is called Marginal planting. Most marginal plants grow very well in a bog planting situation. Try your plants in a few different locations and in different water depths till you see the best color and the best growth. You may plant your plants simply by placing the root crown and root ball in between some stones, generally this is all your plant needs to take off. If you wish, you may plant them in aquatic planting baskets. My favorite is to take a 2' x 2' piece of 100% Felt Fabric, add some soil, any old clay soil from your yard will work, no potting or bagged soil, only aquatic soil. Place your plant in the center, wrap the root and dirt around with the felt only leave the root crown and leaves visible, making sure all the soil stays contained in the felt, top the opening with a little gravel. If Felt unravels use some Hot Glue, string, skewers or staples to hold it together. Place this inside your pond, secure with stones so it doesn't simply float away.
FLOATING PLANTS/ WATER LETTUCE
Floating plants and water lettuce are my most common sellers. They are simple to grow, easy to take care of, and add instant greenery to your pond, making it look more natural and inviting. When you receive your water lettuce from shipment, unpack the plants as soon as possible. Water lettuce will shed some to most of its roots during shipment, don’t be alarmed, this is normal. Your plants have been in a box without any light for a few days, don’t shock them with sun. Place your plants in a shady location first, if your pond is completely in full sun, place your water lettuce in a large container filled with your declorinated pond water. Over a week move them to your desired location, if leaves start to yellow this may mean they are burning from the full sun, revert to adding them back in the shade and slowly and gradually move them to a sunnier location in the following month. If plants begin to unexpectedly yellow, make sure fish, aphids or other sources are not disturbing the plants.
